This year’s theme, “Colour For Good – Creativity in Adversity,” is open to students worldwide as part of the Society of Dyers and Colourists’ (SDC) 2024/2025 International Design Competition. Undergraduate and graduate students studying fashion and textile design at SDC member colleges have the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity, vision, and creative solutions to contemporary industry difficulties through the yearly competition, which offers a global platform.

The upcoming generation of designers is encouraged to explore the science, art, and environmental effects of color in the textile industry via the SDC International Design Competition. This year’s subject, which places a great focus on sustainability, invites participants to investigate how creativity may flourish under trying circumstances. Through their submissions, students will be better able to comprehend the difficulties in the textile supply chain and show how color can be a positive force in a world where social and environmental problems are becoming more prevalent.

Under the direction of their tutors, participants will create designs that are both aesthetically pleasing and consistent with sustainable principles. Designs will be evaluated based on their creative use of color, materials, and sustainability. In addition to receiving international media attention, the winner of each national heat will go on to the global grand final, which will take place in late 2025 and award the ultimate winner with a trophy and £1,000.

“We’re really excited to see what this year’s entrants create,” said Clare Moore, SDC membership manager, in response to the competition’s opening. The designs from the previous year were outstanding, and we anticipate even better submissions in 2025. This year’s subject encourages students to think about the profound connections between color, its science, and its history, as well as how they may use these connections to promote sustainability and resilience.

“We recognize that this is a difficult brief, but for many, entering the competition might be a life-changing experience. I urge participants to carefully examine the effects of the colors they choose, taking into account elements like waste minimization, energy use, and social impact.

Students who are presently enrolled at SDC college member institutions are eligible to enter the competition, and interested students and tutors are urged to get in touch for more details on the advantages of SDC membership. Please send an email to members@sdc.org.uk with any questions or to express interest.
