International Textile Industry Statistics (ITIS) on the consumption of raw materials and production capacity in the short-staple organized (spinning mill) sector in almost all countries that produce textiles have been released by the International Textile Manufacturer Federation (www.itmf.org). ITMF has examined historical time series and employed a new computation technique.
232 million short-staple spindles and 9.7 million open-end rotors were installed worldwide in 2023, according to estimates (see Fig. 1 and 2). Asia continues to be disproportionately targeted by capacity building. Air-jet spindle installations skyrocketed to 637 thousand. The largest capacity increase outside of Asia was noted in Turkey.
Worldwide Installed Capabilities and Raw Material Use in the Textile Industries’ Short-Staple Organized (Spinning Mill) Sector (1993–2023)
In 2023, there were 1.7 million shuttle-less looms in operation (Fig. 3). The short-staple organized sector’s overall raw material consumption dropped somewhat to 43 million tons (Fig. 4). The consumption of cellulosic short-staple fibers and raw cotton fell by 2.9% and 4.4% globally, respectively. Synthetic short-staple fiber consumption rose by 0.5 percent.
