LeighFazackerley’s, a family-run business that has been a cornerstone of home furnishing in Leigh for over six decades, is set to close its doors as its owner, John Fazackerley, announces his retirement.

The business first opened in Westleigh in 1961 after John completed his National Service. Over the years, Fazackerley’s earned a stellar reputation for offering high-quality furniture and exceptional customer service. Its success led to the expansion of additional units on Leigh Road, King Street, and Silk Street, as well as a store in Bolton. Eventually, the business consolidated its operations at Silk Street, where it has been a local fixture.

Fazackerley’s became known for its premium furniture offerings, including chairs, couches, and beds, as well as other home essentials such as tables, wardrobes, and accessories. Generations of families have walked through the doors, relying on Fazackerley’s not only for its products but also for personalized service and expert advice.

“We have always sold high-quality products, and I think people appreciated that,” said John Fazackerley, 89. “We’ve had generations of families coming back to us, with sons and daughters saying they used to come in with their parents when they were younger.”

The business also stood out as a trusted establishment where customers could purchase furniture through instalments, helping countless families furnish their homes affordably. However, in recent years, John acknowledged that competing with online shopping and retail parks has become increasingly challenging, especially as foot traffic in Leigh town center declined.

Reflecting on the town’s changing retail landscape, John expressed fond memories of busier times and noted how factors like a lack of free parking and increased anti-social behavior have deterred shoppers. The challenges intensified during the pandemic, but John remains grateful for the support of his loyal customers.

“I’ve spent so much time at this business, but it’s been worth it,” John said. “Our customers became friends, and we’re proud to have been able to help so many people furnish their homes.”

In response to the closure, Fazackerley’s launched a major closing-down sale, drawing an overwhelming response from the community. Many customers have sent messages of support or stopped by the store to bid farewell to the beloved family business.

Though no definitive closing date has been announced, Fazackerley’s will likely remain open until at least March. The closure marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of quality, trust, and community connection.
