Richard Hutten Mixes Tradition & Whimsy for Jaipur Rugs

During the prestigious Milan Design Week this April, Dutch designer Richard Hutten unveiled a truly unique rug collection for Jaipur Rugs titled Playing with Tradition. As the name suggests, the collection playfully disrupts classic rug-making traditions with bold, contemporary twists.

Each rug is crafted using age-old techniques and traditional Indian patterns, but Hutten infuses them with unexpected “interruptions” such as confetti-inspired splashes, neon bursts, and whimsical shapes like banana peels. One standout design, Confetti 2, draws direct inspiration from India’s vibrant Holi festival and echoes the joyful dotted aesthetic reminiscent of Yayoi Kusama’s famous art.

The nine-piece collection surprises and delights, blending humor and heritage. Its playful shapes and 3D textures stand out from the traditional background, creating rugs that feel simultaneously nostalgic and refreshingly modern. These pieces not only redefine rug design but also invite broader possibilities for mixing tradition with novelty in home interiors.
