Epson has announced the celebration of its 50th anniversary, marking half a century of innovation, reliability, and customer-centric solutions. The company, renowned for its cutting-edge technology and global influence, attributes its long-standing success to the trust and support of customers, partners, and employees worldwide.

Though the Epson brand officially debuted in 1975, its legacy began in 1942, rooted in the meticulous precision of Japan’s watchmaking industry. Since then, Epson has relentlessly pushed the boundaries of innovation—introducing efficient, compact, and high-performance solutions across sectors including printing, visual communication, robotics, and beyond.

As part of its golden jubilee, Epson has reiterated its commitment to “delivering surprise and delight” by consistently exceeding customer expectations through purposeful design and transformative technology.

The Birth of a Global Brand

The Epson name originated from the phenomenal success of the EP-101—the world’s first compact electronic printer launched in 1968. The brand name “Epson” was coined to reflect the vision of producing many “sons” (or future innovations) from the original “EP” (Electronic Printer). This philosophy has shaped the company’s DNA ever since.

Breakthroughs Across Multiple Sectors

  • Printing Solutions:
Epson revolutionized the printing industry with its proprietary Micro Piezo inkjet technology introduced in 1993, followed by the launch of high-capacity ink tank printers in 2010—achieving over 100 million global sales and more than 8 million units sold in India alone. Its PrecisionCore printhead technology further extended its influence into commercial and industrial domains, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional laser printers.

  • Visual Communications:
Utilizing its expertise in liquid crystal technology, Epson unveiled the world’s first compact full-color LCD projector in 1989. Its HTPS (high-temperature polysilicon) panels enabled brighter, high-quality projection. The brand has held the No.1 global projector title for 23 consecutive years and has led the Indian market for nearly a decade.

  • Manufacturing & Wearables:
Building on its roots in precision engineering, Epson developed its first industrial robots in the 1980s. Today, its SCARA robots dominate the market with unmatched accuracy and speed. From creating the first commercial quartz watch in 1969 to supplying key low-power crystal devices for smartphones and wearables, Epson has maintained a leadership role in precision manufacturing.

Global Growth and Local Impact

Epson’s global expansion began with its first overseas manufacturing facility in Singapore (1968) and the founding of Epson America in 1975. With a presence in over 89 countries and more than 75,000 employees, Epson has cultivated strong global relationships. In India, Epson India Pvt. Ltd., established in 2000 and headquartered in Bengaluru, continues to deliver customized solutions—from cost-effective home printers to advanced signage and textile printers tailored for Indian businesses.

Looking to the Future

As Epson enters its next chapter, it remains grounded in its corporate philosophy: efficiency, compactness, and precision. With a deep commitment to environmental sustainability and customer satisfaction, Epson plans to continue shaping industries and enriching lives across the globe.
