Spanish textile technology company Jeanologia has introduced BILLY, an artificial intelligence system designed specifically for denim development. The new technology is capable of extracting precise laser designs directly from a garment image, enabling the recreation of vintage denim effects in just a few minutes.

More than 25 years ago, Jeanologia introduced laser finishing technology that replaced many manual denim treatment processes, reducing environmental impact and improving worker safety. With the launch of BILLY, the company is now applying artificial intelligence to one of the most complex stages of denim production — the design phase.

Traditionally, converting the visual character of a vintage garment into a laser design suitable for production required several hours or even days of work by experienced designers. The process often involved manual adjustments during production to achieve an authentic look.

With the introduction of Jeanologia AI, the workflow changes significantly. The system analyzes an image of a garment and automatically extracts a laser-ready design that captures natural wear patterns and vintage characteristics. The output is optimized for laser technology, enabling accurate and consistent reproduction without the need for manual retouching or traditional processing methods.

“BILLY brings intelligence to the creative process,” said Enrique Silla, CEO of Jeanologia. “For the first time, designers can transform a garment image into a precise laser design ready for production in just minutes. What previously required a full day of expert work can now be achieved almost instantly.”

The company describes BILLY as a significant development in denim design, linking inspiration, digital creation, and industrial production within a much shorter timeframe.

Inspiration from denim heritage

The name BILLY originates from a historic pair of jeans preserved in the Jeanologia archive. The garment dates back to World War II and belonged to an American soldier named Billy who travelled to Europe during the war.

Years later, Jeanologia acquired the jeans and displayed them in its Truth & Light exhibition, where the industry first observed how technology could reproduce the natural wear patterns of vintage garments. The jeans, marked by repairs, fading, and creases, represent the authenticity associated with denim culture.

According to the company, BILLY AI builds on decades of research into how denim ages naturally. The system has been trained using more than 9,000 laser designs developed by Jeanologia over more than 25 years of experience in laser finishing technology.

This dataset enables the artificial intelligence model to understand the structure and depth of denim wear patterns. It can then extract these patterns from garment images and convert them into precise laser files ready for production marking.

When combined with Jeanologia’s laser technology, the company says the system ensures that digitally created designs can be reproduced on garments with consistency and accuracy.

Supporting designers and accelerating product development

Jeanologia states that BILLY is intended to support designers rather than replace them. By automating the technical process of extracting complex wear patterns, designers can focus more on concept development and creative exploration.

“BILLY does not replace designers; it amplifies their creativity,” explained Enrique Silla. “It removes the most labor-intensive technical work and allows them to focus on what truly matters: creating.”

The technology also aligns with the continuing demand for vintage-style denim across fashion segments, from luxury labels to premium and fast-fashion brands. Traditionally, reproducing such detailed wear effects involved labor-intensive treatments, including water-heavy and chemical-based processes.

By combining AI-based design extraction with laser finishing, brands can recreate vintage aesthetics with greater accuracy while reducing manual intervention and environmental impact.

With the launch of BILLY, Jeanologia continues its focus on digital innovation in denim production, aiming to support a more creative and resource-efficient manufacturing process while maintaining the authentic character associated with heritage denim.
