Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL), the power utility serving around 9 million consumers across North Delhi, has implemented a comprehensive electrical safety plan ahead of the Kanwar Yatra 2026, scheduled to take place from 30 July to 11 August.
With the annual pilgrimage expected to attract large numbers of devotees along designated routes, the utility has intensified its preparations to minimize electrical hazards, particularly during the ongoing monsoon season when the risk of accidental contact with electrical infrastructure increases.
As part of its preparedness measures, Tata Power-DDL has conducted an extensive survey across its operational areas and carried out leakage testing of electrical poles, transformers, and substations situated along Kanwar Yatra routes. The company has also ensured that all company-maintained streetlights are functioning properly to provide safe passage for pilgrims during day and night.
To enhance electrical safety at Kanwar camps, the utility has issued detailed safety guidelines, emphasizing that all camps should have metered electricity connections, properly rated Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) and Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers (ELCBs), along with high-quality insulated wiring appropriate for the connected electrical load. Open wire joints should be avoided, while damaged electrical panels and hazardous installations must be securely barricaded or fenced.
Considering the likelihood of heavy rainfall during the pilgrimage, additional monitoring has been planned for low-lying and waterlogged locations to reduce electrical risks.
Tata Power-DDL has also appealed to devotees and the general public to cooperate by following key electrical safety practices throughout the pilgrimage.
The utility has advised pilgrims to maintain a safe distance from electric poles, transformers, exposed wires, and other electrical installations. Electrical equipment at Kanwar camps should be used carefully, and no electrical device should be handled with wet hands.
Pilgrims have also been requested to immediately report any electrical leakage or hazardous conditions to the nearest electricity office or through the company’s 19124 helpline.
Special precautions have been recommended for devotees carrying decorated Kanwars or vehicle-mounted structures. Tata Power-DDL has advised maintaining a minimum vertical clearance of 2 metres from overhead electrical lines and warned against using iron pipes or wet sticks to lift or move electrical wires under any circumstances.
The utility has further requested that DJ systems, Kanwars, flags, banners, and posters should not be placed or installed beneath high-voltage power lines or attached to electrical poles and equipment.
Through these preventive measures and public awareness efforts, Tata Power-DDL aims to ensure a safe and uninterrupted Kanwar Yatra while minimizing electrical risks for pilgrims and residents across North Delhi.
