The new lab will help reduce textile waste. It will also promote the reuse of old fabrics.

The lab will collect textile waste from garment units and tailoring shops. The waste will then be sorted and processed.

Some of the recovered fabric will be used again. It will be made into garments, bags and other useful products. This will give textile waste a new purpose.

New Step for Textile Recycling

The lab was opened at Kasa Rasa Kendra in Koramangala. The centre is a ward-level solid waste management facility.

NGO Saahas started the centre. South City Corporation is leading the new textile recycling project.

Forest Minister Ramalinga Reddy inaugurated the facility. Officials from the Greater Bengaluru Authority also attended the event.

The project aims to keep textile waste away from landfills. It also supports a more circular approach to textile waste.

Creating Jobs for Local Workers

The lab will also create jobs. Local tailors and women from low-income communities can find work through the project.

A thrift store will also operate at the centre. It will sell products made from recycled textiles.

The money earned from the store will support the workers. It will also help run the textile recycling project.

Focus on Cleaner Recycling

The centre has an effluent and sewage treatment system. This system will treat wastewater from textile processing.

It will also help manage dyes and chemicals used during processing. As a result, the recycling process can reduce the risk of additional pollution.

The model has already been used in Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). The Koramangala lab will be the first step in Bengaluru.

The project may later expand to other wards across the city. It shows Bengaluru’s growing focus on textile recycling, textile upcycling and the circular economy.
