Australia’s wool market closed Week 11 on a weaker note. Buyers became more selective after early gains faded during the second selling day.

According to Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), national wool offerings reached 23,486 bales. This was 1,535 bales lower than the previous week. Buyers purchased 21,147 bales, while the national pass-in rate rose to 10.0%.

Eastern Market Indicator Falls 12 Cents

The Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) ended the week at 1,878 A¢/kg, down 12 cents. The Australian dollar also strengthened during the week and reached 72.32 US cents.

The stronger currency lifted the EMI in US-dollar terms. It rose by 8 US cents to 1,358 US¢/kg.

Trading began on Tuesday with stronger demand for several Eastern Merino categories. Prices were unchanged to 37 cents higher. The EMI also gained three cents.

Fremantle recorded mixed results. Fine wool performed well, while some broader microns lost ground.

Market sentiment changed on Wednesday. Most Merino descriptions fell in value. Buyers also became more selective.

Fine wool remained in demand. Better European-style fleece at 19 microns and finer attracted interest. Broader and standard topmaking wool was generally cheaper.

The EMI fell 15 cents on Wednesday.

Wool Supply Remains Below Last Season

Traders were the main buyers during the week, followed by processors. AWI also reported a rise in wool that was passed in or withdrawn.

The current market remains stronger than the same period last year. In Week 11 of 2025, the EMI rose 28 cents to 1,319 A¢/kg.

The current EMI is still 559 cents, or 42.4%, higher than last year.

Season-to-date wool offerings reached 224,060 bales. This is around 9% below the same period last season.

Larger Offering Expected Next Week

The market will now focus on Week 12. National wool offerings are expected to rise to around 30,185 bales.

Market participants will also watch the 37th Nanjing Wool Market Conference, scheduled for September 18–20.

The conference is expected to provide further insight into Chinese processor and trader sentiment. The larger wool offering will also provide a key test of demand.
