India’s textile industry recorded strong growth in August 2026, while apparel manufacturing continued to face a decline. The latest Index of Industrial Production (IIP) data highlights a widening gap between the two sectors.
According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), India’s overall industrial output grew by 8% in August 2026, up from 6.7% in July.
The manufacturing sector also reported positive growth across 18 of its 23 industry groups during the month, compared with August 2025.
However, the apparel manufacturing sector contracted by 7.4% in August 2026. It also recorded a cumulative decline of 5.6% during the April–August period of the current financial year.
In contrast, the textile industry grew by 13.1% in August 2026. Its cumulative growth reached 11.9% during April–August, indicating continued momentum in the upstream textile sector.
The latest figures highlight contrasting performance across India’s textile value chain. While textile production continues to expand, apparel manufacturing remains under pressure, despite the broader growth in industrial output.
