Lighting trends for 2027 focus on sculptural designs, layered illumination, reflective materials and restored vintage fixtures. Interior designers are also exploring integrated lighting that highlights architectural details and creates a comfortable atmosphere.

According to Southern Living, designers Samantha Tosti, Gabriela Eisenhart and Jeffrey Bruce Baker have identified six lighting trends gaining attention for the coming year.

1. Organic Shapes and Asymmetrical Designs

Lighting fixtures are moving beyond conventional geometric shapes. Designers are exploring organic forms and asymmetrical silhouettes that function as decorative features.

Jeffrey Bruce Baker views lighting as jewellery for the home. Sculptural fixtures can complement both modern and traditional interiors while adding visual interest.

2. Timeless Copper Fixtures

Copper lighting is returning to the spotlight, particularly for exterior spaces. Designer Samantha Tosti highlights copper fixtures for their lasting appeal and ability to develop a rich patina over time.

Copper porch lights can also add character to entrances and outdoor living areas.

3. Layered Lighting

Layered lighting combines different fixtures to create a balanced atmosphere. Instead of relying only on recessed ceiling lights, designers recommend combining overhead fixtures, wall sconces and table lamps.

Gabriela Eisenhart also recommends coordinating bulb colour temperatures. Warmer lighting can create a softer and more comfortable environment.

4. Reflective Materials

Reflective materials are gaining attention for their ability to distribute light across a room. These fixtures can create indirect illumination and enhance the overall lighting effect.

Baker advises homeowners to assess how a fixture casts light before selecting it. Viewing a light in person or examining photographs of it switched on can help with the decision.

5. Restored Antique Lighting

Vintage chandeliers and Art Nouveau flush-mount fixtures continue to attract interest. Designers value antique lighting for its distinctive character and history.

Tosti encourages homeowners to consider unique finds from antique shops. However, older fixtures may require professional rewiring to meet current electrical safety standards.

6. Advanced Integrated Lighting

Integrated lighting is becoming more closely connected with architectural features. Designers are incorporating lighting into built-in furniture, cabinetry and millwork.

Eisenhart notes that this approach places greater emphasis on the glow rather than the visibility of the fixture itself. Integrated lighting can highlight architectural details while maintaining a clean appearance.

Lighting Trends Combine Function and Design

The six trends highlight different approaches to residential lighting in 2027. Sculptural fixtures offer decorative appeal, while layered and integrated systems help shape the atmosphere of a room.

Copper finishes, reflective surfaces and restored antiques also provide options for homeowners seeking distinctive details. Together, these approaches show how lighting can contribute to both the functionality and visual character of modern interiors.
