The shabby chic home decor trend is making a comeback, bringing vintage furniture, soft colours and romantic details back into interiors. The renewed interest follows the popularity of cottagecore, grandma-inspired decor and nostalgic design styles.

According to Good Housekeeping, retailers are also revisiting this aesthetic. Target has announced the return of its “Simply Shabby Chic” line by Rachel Ashwell. The style combines traditional elements with modern touches to create comfortable, lived-in spaces.

Soft Colours and Distressed Furniture

A soft colour palette is central to shabby chic interiors. Off-white, pale blue, dusty rose and sage green create a gentle, relaxed look. Matte or eggshell paint finishes can complement these shades.

Distressed and whitewashed furniture adds character to the space. Interior designer Vivian Robins suggests pairing whitewashed furniture with traditional walnut pieces. This combination balances light finishes with warmth and depth.

Layered Textiles and Floral Patterns

Textiles play an important role in this design style. Ruffled bedding, quilted fabrics, lace details and linen add softness and texture. Floral prints and gingham patterns can also create visual interest.

Homeowners can introduce these patterns through quilts, curtains, wallpaper and decorative cushions. Vintage floral paintings arranged in different sizes and frames offer another way to create a collected look.

French Country Details Complete the Look

French country-inspired lighting and vintage accessories help complete shabby chic interiors. Crystal chandeliers, pastel table lamps, antique books, decorative baskets and brass or silver trays complement the aesthetic.

The trend offers a way to combine old and new furnishings without making a room feel overly formal. Through soft colours, layered fabrics and carefully selected vintage pieces, shabby chic design brings a nostalgic character to contemporary homes.
