Purpose-built township combines housing, education, healthcare and community facilities to support workforce wellbeing and long-term growth
Asia Pacific Rayon (APR), a member of the RGE group of companies founded by Sukanto Tanoto, has highlighted its Riau Complex as an integrated employee township designed to support workforce wellbeing through housing, education, healthcare and community infrastructure.
Located in Pangkalan Kerinci, Riau Province, Indonesia, the development serves as both a residential community and an operational support ecosystem for APR’s viscose rayon manufacturing operations.
Integrated Township for Employees and Families
According to the company, the Riau Complex brings together residential housing, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, recreational amenities and community services within a single township.
The integrated model is intended to support employees and their families while promoting workforce engagement, talent retention and long-term operational resilience.
The company stated that purpose-built residential environments are becoming increasingly important as industrial businesses compete for skilled talent.
Growth of the Riau Complex
The Riau Complex traces its origins to 1993, when the area consisted of around 200 homes along the riverside.
Today, it has grown into a township with a population of more than 100,000 people, supporting APR’s manufacturing operations as well as employees, contractors and local businesses connected to the regional industrial ecosystem.
Located approximately two hours from Pekanbaru, the township provides employees with access to housing and essential services close to the company’s production facilities.
Education, Healthcare and Community Facilities
The township includes accredited educational institutions managed by the Kerinci Citra Kasih Foundation (YKCK), including Mutiara Harapan School (SMH) and an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma school in Riau Province.
Healthcare services are provided through dedicated medical clinics, while additional facilities include sports amenities and the RGE Community Centre (RGECC) to support employee wellbeing and community activities.
APR also organises initiatives such as Cultural Week, where employees from different nationalities participate in cultural performances, food events and traditional activities aimed at strengthening cross-cultural understanding.
Supporting Workforce Wellbeing
The company noted that green spaces, recreational facilities and community programmes contribute to work-life balance for residents of all ages.
The proximity of residential areas to manufacturing operations also helps reduce commuting times while supporting workforce stability and employee engagement.
According to APR, the Riau Complex reflects a broader industry trend of industrial companies investing in residential and social infrastructure alongside manufacturing operations to support talent attraction, employee wellbeing and long-term regional development.
