ASPA highlights growing counterfeit risks as CRISIL survey finds 89% of consumers have unknowingly purchased fake products.

On the occasion of World Anti-Counterfeiting Day, the Authentication Solution Providers’ Association (ASPA) urged industries to accelerate the adoption of authentication and traceability technologies to combat counterfeit products and improve supply chain transparency across India.

The association stated that advanced authentication solutions are becoming increasingly important for protecting consumers, safeguarding brand reputation, and strengthening supply chain integrity.

Counterfeit products remain a widespread challenge

According to the CRISIL-ASPA State of Counterfeiting in India 2025 Report, counterfeit goods continue to impact sectors including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, FMCG, automotive components, consumer durables and industrial products.

The consumer survey, conducted by CRISIL Intelligence across 1,639 respondents in nine cities, found that 89% of consumers had purchased a counterfeit product at least once. Respondents also estimated that nearly 29% of products available in local markets are counterfeit.

Beyond financial losses, ASPA noted that counterfeit products pose significant risks to public health, consumer safety and brand credibility.

Need for stronger authentication systems

ASPA President Ankit Gupta said the survey findings highlight the need for wider adoption of authentication and traceability solutions throughout supply chains.

He noted that integrating product verification and traceability technologies can improve transparency, strengthen brand integrity and help create a safer marketplace for consumers.

Industry collaboration continues

For nearly 28 years, ASPA has worked to raise awareness about counterfeiting through industry research, policy advocacy, stakeholder engagement, awareness campaigns and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

The association’s member companies currently provide physical, digital and phygital authentication solutions for thousands of brands worldwide.

Upcoming industry forum

ASPA also announced that it will soon host the next edition of its Traceability & Authentication Forum (TAF), bringing together stakeholders from industry, government, academia and technology to discuss trusted products, transparent supply chains and emerging anti-counterfeiting solutions.

The association reiterated that addressing counterfeiting requires coordinated efforts across industries, policymakers and technology providers, with authentication and traceability expected to play a central role in securing India’s supply chains.
