Autoneum’s E-Fiber Flame Shields: Redefining EV Battery Safety

As electric vehicle adoption grows, ensuring battery safety has become a critical concern for manufacturers. Autoneum addresses this challenge with its latest innovation — E-Fiber flame shields, engineered to provide high-performance flame protection and electrical insulation within the battery housing.

These advanced shields are capable of withstanding extreme temperatures up to 1400°C, as well as pressure and hot particle abrasion. This resilience significantly enhances passenger safety in the event of a thermal runaway — when a battery overheats and risks igniting or exploding.

What sets E-Fiber flame shields apart is their composite construction made from reinforcing fibers and resin. Compared to traditional mica-based alternatives, E-Fiber offers superior mechanical strength, reduced weight, and cost-efficiency. At only 1 to 2 millimeters thick, the material ensures optimal space utilization without compromising safety.

E-Fiber shields also provide electrical insulation, essential for protecting high-voltage battery systems. Their moldability supports complex 3D geometries, enabling precise battery coverage and the integration of functions such as hot gas deflection — further enhancing system safety and design flexibility.

From a compliance standpoint, E-Fiber offers a responsible alternative to mineral-based products, free from sourcing concerns associated with mica. The solution has been successfully validated in battery tests and is currently in pre-development with multiple automotive manufacturers in Europe.

Autoneum’s E-Fiber flame shields deliver a robust, lightweight, and scalable solution — ready to meet the evolving safety standards of the electric mobility market.
