Bathroom renovation trends 2026 focus on comfort, personal care and practical design. Homeowners are upgrading showers, vanities, lighting and storage. These changes help create bathrooms that support daily routines and relaxation.
The 2026 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study surveyed more than 1,600 homeowners who were renovating or had recently renovated their bathrooms. The findings highlight the growing demand for functional and personalised spaces.
Self-Care Shapes Bathroom Design
Many homeowners are using their bathrooms for more than daily routines. The study found that half of the respondents spent more time relaxing or focusing on self-care after their renovations.
However, most homeowners are not increasing the overall size of their bathrooms. Instead, they are improving layouts, expanding showers and updating plumbing, heating and ventilation.
According to Houzz, 82% of renovated bathrooms retain their original size. The study also found that around 90% of homeowners hire professionals for their projects.
Natural Materials and Neutral Colours Remain Popular
Bathroom style updates remain common. The study found that 81% of homeowners changed their bathroom’s style during renovation.
Transitional and contemporary designs lead the choices. Solid wood cabinets, including maple and white oak, are popular. White and off-white quartzite countertops and neutral wall colours are also preferred.
Homeowners are adding personality through accent walls. Among those who choose this feature, 53% use patterns, while 48% choose colour. Surface materials and textures offer other ways to create visual interest.
Porcelain and ceramic tiles remain popular for shower floors and other bathroom flooring.
Smart Mirrors and Custom Vanities Gain Attention
Special features are becoming an important part of bathroom upgrades. These include recessed lighting, bidet toilet seats and mirrors with adjustable lighting.
The study found that 33% of homeowners added a specialty mirror feature. LED lighting and anti-fog systems were common choices.
Vanities are also receiving attention. Around 61% of homeowners selected custom or semi-custom vanities. Popular features include soft-close drawers, built-in electrical outlets and organisers for hair tools.
These additions improve storage and make everyday routines easier.
Accessibility Supports Future Needs
Homeowners are also planning for future accessibility. Nearly three-quarters of respondents were making bathroom improvements to meet their changing needs.
This focus places practical design alongside comfort and appearance. Wider showers, improved layouts and suitable fixtures can help homeowners use their bathrooms more comfortably over time.
Practical Upgrades Shape Bathroom Renovations
The findings show a clear focus on comfort, functionality and personalisation. Homeowners are updating existing spaces rather than expanding them.
Neutral finishes, improved lighting, custom storage and accessibility features are shaping bathroom renovation choices in 2026. These upgrades help balance everyday needs with relaxation and personal care.
