On March 10, 1971, the Dharma Pala Education Foundation established a higher education institution named Indonesian Tourism Academy (AKI), located on Jalan Janti, Yogyakarta. Then, starting from December 19, 1983, AKI came under the coordination of the Higher Education Coordination Region V Yogyakarta, and based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0355/0/1983 dated August 25, 1983, AKI was granted Registered status.

Based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 042/0/1985 dated August 25, 1985, AKI changed its name to the Indonesian Academy of Tourism (API) and offered two departments: Hospitality Management and Tourism Development. Since the 1985/1986 academic year, API has occupied its new, privately-owned campus located at Jl. Babarsari TB XV/15 Catur Tunggal, Depok, Sleman, Yogyakarta Special Region (DI Yogyakarta).

In 1990, API received a decree from the Minister of Education and Culture dated December 11, 1990, No. 0718/0/1990, upgrading its status from Registered to Recognized. Then, in 1995, based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 40/DIKTI/KEP/1995 dated February 14, 1995, API was granted the highest accreditation status, Equalized.

In line with its development, on January 13, 1997, based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 01/D/0/1997, the Indonesian Academy of Tourism evolved into “API” Polytechnic Yogyakarta. This transition was marked by the addition of two new departments: Taxation and Telecommunications Engineering.
