Legacy Rooted in History, Shaping a Multilingual Future
Empowering over 70,000 students across disciplines, Marmara University leads with a tradition of excellence and innovation.
Marmara University stands as one of the oldest and most prestigious educational institutions in Turkey. Established on January 16, 1883, under the name Hamidiye Ticaret Mekteb-i Âlisi, it initially served the commercial, agricultural, forestry, and mining sectors. Operating from a modest house in Cağoğlu, it produced its first graduates in 1887. Although briefly closed in 1893 for reformation, it reopened in 1897 under the Ministry of Education and has continued to grow ever since.
In 1959, it evolved into the Istanbul Economic and Commercial Sciences Academy, and by 1982, it had officially become Marmara University under national educational reforms. The university began the 1982–83 academic year with 9 faculties, 1 school, and 1 institute. Today, Marmara boasts 16 faculties, 9 schools, and 11 institutes, offering 199 associate and undergraduate degree programs.
Marmara University is home to nearly 3,000 academic staff and over 70,000 students. It is uniquely positioned as Turkey’s only multilingual university, offering instruction in Turkish, English, French, German, and Arabic across faculties such as Economics, Business, Fine Arts, Political Science, Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, and Theology.
With its strong foundation in education and research, Marmara has also become a significant player in social services, publishing, and consultancy. It embraces the challenges of the information age by aligning its mission with societal demands and by contributing to national technological and workforce development. Its commitment to solving economic, political, and cultural issues has cemented its reputation both nationally and internationally.
