Driving R&D and High-Performance Solutions for Brazil’s Chemical and Textile Industries

The SENAI Innovation Institute (ISI) was established in response to a clear demand from the Brazilian chemical industry, with strong support from ABIQUIM in shaping its vision and structure.

Through a series of workshops led by the Fraunhofer Institute and involving industry leaders and academia, key technological gaps and R&D needs in Brazil’s chemical sector were identified. As a result, ISI now collaborates with numerous chemical companies on cutting-edge research, development, and innovation (R&D&I) projects.

The institute’s relevance has been further validated by strategic studies such as the National Industry Compact (ABIQUIM, 2011) and Diversification of the Brazilian Chemical Industry (Bain & Co and GasEnergy, commissioned by BNDES, 2014). These reports highlight the potential to leverage pre-salt oil reserves, Brazilian biomass, and local biodiversity as key inputs for the country’s industrial development.

Expanding its impact, ISI supported by ABINT, ABIT, and ABRAFAS has also built a specialized team in fibers and textile finishing. This team focuses on the development of technical textiles and high-performance fibers, strengthening Brazil’s position in advanced textile technologies.
