Kitchen design trends may change, but many popular ideas have been around for decades. An archive of House Beautiful highlights 18 iconic kitchens from 1949 to 2022. Each space offers a different approach to layout, colour, storage, materials and function.
Kitchens That Still Inspire Modern Design
The collection begins with a compact 1949 kitchen inspired by a dining car galley. It was planned to store 3,273 cooking items while keeping them easy to reach.
A 1951 kitchen focused on tiled cabinets and built-in appliances. In 1967, a narrow galley kitchen used a painted cabinet door to create the look of a separate room.
In 1969, architect Raymond D. Reed created a hexagonal kitchen with a skylight. The unusual shape allowed several people to cook and gather comfortably.
A 1974 kitchen brought the outdoors inside with skylights. The design created a treehouse-like setting while maintaining a fully functional cooking space.
The 1980 kitchen of restaurateur John Lamprecht combined professional equipment with hand-painted Portuguese tiles. A large Garland range and Traulsen refrigerator-freezer gave the space a restaurant-style setup.
Colour, Flexibility and Character
The archive also includes kitchens that used design details to create a strong visual identity. A 1981 sitting room featured a hidden burgundy bar with brass, stainless steel and mirrored surfaces.
Another 1981 kitchen combined three former spaces into one large room. Leaded-glass windows and a 16-foot ceiling helped create an open and distinctive setting.
In 1984, Marimekko designer Ristomatti Ratia created a flexible kitchen. Its dining table could move around the room to suit different family gatherings.
A 1989 kitchen by Linda Di Martino used painted blue cabinets from England. The update gave the kitchen a new look while keeping the existing appliances.
The collection also features a 1994 Hamptons kitchen associated with Ina Garten. Its checkered floor, glass-front cabinets and wallpapered backsplash created a simple and welcoming style.
From Vintage Details to Smart Storage
Later examples show how older design ideas continue to shape contemporary kitchens. A 1995 Manhattan loft used an old grocery counter as a kitchen island. Another 1995 kitchen used vintage-inspired tilework and cabinets to make a new range look like an older stove.
In 2019, a California kitchen paired white oak shelving with Calacatta Gold marble. Another 2019 kitchen used IKEA cabinets covered in a custom ikat-patterned vinyl.
The 2022 kitchens focused strongly on practical living. One design included cutting-board drawers, a decluttering sink and a hidden pot-filler for pet bowls. Another updated a family kitchen for empty nesters with white oak cabinet fronts and a glass-door pantry.
The 18 kitchens show that good kitchen design is not only about following trends. Smart layouts, flexible furniture, practical storage, colour and character can remain relevant for years.
