GS1 India Hosts General Assembly 2025, Focusing on Trusted Data and a Digital Future
Mumbai, 21st May 2025 – GS1 India successfully hosted the GS1 General Assembly 2025 in Mumbai, with an ambitious vision to enable a future driven by trusted data and seamless digital transformation, particularly in an era increasingly shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Speaking at the event, Mr. Mark Batenic, Chairman of the GS1 Management Board, emphasized that in today’s AI-powered world, data quality is no longer optional—it’s fundamental. He highlighted how reliable data can revolutionize industries, from healthcare to retail, and drive societal progress.
With the theme “Building Bridges for a Better Tomorrow,” the assembly highlighted the pivotal role of collaboration and trust in the rapidly evolving digital economy. This year’s event marked a historic first—the GS1 General Assembly being hosted in India.
Mr. Renaud De Barbuat, President & CEO of GS1 Global, discussed how GS1 must strengthen its foundation of global standards to support real-time, trustworthy data exchange across sectors like agriculture, logistics, healthcare, and retail.
Mr. S. Swaminathan, CEO of GS1 India, reflected on the evolution of Indian retail and GS1’s work in creating centralized registries to meet the rising need for data trust and regulatory compliance.
Mr. Vimal Anand, President of GS1 India and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, highlighted India’s digital leadership as it ascends to becoming the world’s third-largest economy. He praised GS1 India’s vital contribution in ensuring digital systems’ integrity.

With over 150 global leaders, tech experts, and regulators participating, the four-day Assembly concluded on 22nd May. It reaffirmed GS1’s Vision 2030—to lead the way in sustainable, transparent, and resilient digital supply chains.
