Gandhinagar: The state government declared on Sunday that Gujarat is the country’s second-largest cotton-growing state, with 26.8 lakh hectares under cultivation and 92 lakh bales produced annually. This announcement was made in advance of World Cotton Day on October 7. The government reports that the state’s cotton productivity is currently 589 kilograms per acre.

The production of cotton was only 139 kg per hectare in 1960, when Gujarat was created, but it has now climbed to 589 kg per hectare, according to State Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel.

“This proves that the state’s income has been greatly boosted by research, farmer-friendly policies, and the commitment of cotton growers,” Patel stated.

The minister added that the introduction of the Hybrid-4 cotton variety in 1971 by a research farm in Surat marked the beginning of the development of hybrid cotton in India and resulted in a significant increase in cotton productivity.

Gujarat ranked second in India in 2021–2022 with 22.45 lakh hectares of cotton planted, yielding 73.88 lakh bales and a productivity rate of 559 kg per hectare, according to an official release. According to Patel, Gujarat is anticipated to emerge as the state with the highest yield of cotton in the near future because of a number of incentive programs and continuous research.

Additionally, he highlighted Gujarat’s pioneering role in the BT cotton period. The first two public sector BT hybrid varieties, Gujarat Cotton Hybrid-6 BG-2 and Gujarat Cotton Hybrid-8 BG-2, were developed and recognized by the state first and were approved by the Union government in 2012. In order to give farmers four BT cotton types to choose from, Gujarat released two new BT hybrid varieties in 2015: Gujarat Cotton Hybrid-10 BG-2 and Gujarat Cotton Hybrid-12 BG-2. DeshGujarat
