India’s industrial sector recorded its strongest performance in nearly two years, with the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) expanding 7.3% year-on-year in June 2026, marking the fastest growth in 23 months. The latest government data points to broad-based expansion across manufacturing, electricity, and infrastructure-related sectors, reflecting improving economic momentum and resilient domestic demand.

Manufacturing, the largest contributor to the IIP, grew 7.8% during the month, supported by higher production across a range of industries. The electricity and gas supply segment registered the fastest growth at 10.6%, indicating increased energy demand driven by expanding industrial and commercial activity.

Other sectors also posted positive growth. Water supply, sewerage and waste management increased 6.1%, while mining and quarrying recorded a 1% year-on-year rise.

Commenting on the latest industrial output figures, Shrikant Goyal, Co-Founder of Getfive, said the 7.3% growth demonstrates the resilience of India’s economy despite a challenging global environment.

He noted that MSMEs will play a critical role in sustaining industrial growth due to their significant contribution to manufacturing and employment. According to Goyal, ensuring timely and adequate access to capital through debt, equity, or a combination of both will enable MSMEs to expand their operations and capitalize on emerging opportunities. He added that continued support from the government, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) would further strengthen the financing ecosystem and reinforce India’s long-term industrial growth.

The broad-based expansion across sectors indicates that India’s industrial recovery is becoming increasingly diversified. Growth in manufacturing, infrastructure-related activities, and energy demand reflects sustained domestic consumption and improving business activity.

The latest IIP data also strengthens expectations that India’s industrial sector remains on a solid growth trajectory despite global economic uncertainties. With manufacturing continuing to drive production and investment, the sector is expected to contribute positively to economic growth, employment generation, and business confidence in the coming quarters.
