Mahlo GmbH + Co. KG Celebrates 80 Years of Global Innovation

Saal an der Donau, July 2025:
With eight decades of dedication to precision, innovation, and family values, Mahlo GmbH + Co. KG celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. Established in 1945, the German mechanical engineering firm has transformed from a modest workshop into a globally recognized leader in measurement and control technology for textiles, nonwovens, paper, and plastics.

The Mahlo journey began shortly after World War II, when Dr. Heinz Mahlo founded the Dr. Heinz Mahlo Electromechanical Workshops by assembling radio receivers. His inventive spirit soon shifted focus to the textile industry, where he identified a critical need for quality control in fabric production. In 1958, Mahlo achieved a significant breakthrough with the patent of the world’s first automatic weft straightener—a game-changing innovation that remains foundational to modern textile straightening systems.

Expanding Horizons: From Textiles to Multiple Industries

This pioneering invention laid the groundwork for Mahlo’s long-term success. Over the following decades, the company expanded globally, diversifying its product range to cater to nonwoven, paper, and plastic industries. Subsidiaries were established across the USA, Belgium, Italy, and China, while a robust international service network ensures on-ground customer support across major markets.

“Our strength lies in building on Dr. Mahlo’s legacy while embracing modern challenges,” states Rainer Mestermann, CEO since 2011. “We now offer the broadest portfolio of straightening systems globally and have strategically diversified into web measurement technology with our Qualiscan QMS platform.” Introduced in the late 2000s to reduce dependency on the cyclical textile sector, this new product line has grown so substantially that a dedicated production facility was inaugurated in 2018. Mahlo now holds one of the most comprehensive sensor portfolios developed entirely in-house.

Adapting to Market Shifts with Innovation

Despite its strong position, Mahlo is not insulated from global economic shifts. “With nearly 80% of our revenue coming from exports, global instability directly affects us,” Mestermann remarks. Yet, demand remains steady, driven by industries like clothing and packaging, where consistent quality is non-negotiable. “That’s where Mahlo makes a difference—our systems deliver the reliability brands depend on.”

Looking ahead, Mestermann is confident: “Eighty years of success is the result of continuous innovation, customer trust, and a dedicated team. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved and excited about the future.”

Driving Innovation from Saal an der Donau

At the heart of Mahlo’s innovation is its headquarters in Saal an der Donau, where all systems are developed and produced—underscoring the company’s commitment to Germany as a manufacturing hub. Mahlo also plays a vital role in addressing the country’s skilled labor gap, being one of the largest training enterprises in the Kelheim district.

Ralph Greenwood-Mahlo, grandson of the founder and co-owner with his wife Aura, emphasizes this legacy: “Preserving our family business culture while encouraging innovation is central to our mission. We aim to combine continuity with openness to fresh ideas.”

Innovation with Responsibility

For the Greenwood-Mahlo family, long-term sustainability is a business imperative. “Our systems help customers save raw materials, reduce waste, and increase efficiency—that’s our contribution to a better future,” says Ralph Greenwood-Mahlo. This philosophy mirrors the values of Dr. Heinz Mahlo, who pioneered with a purpose: innovation guided by responsibility.

“As a family enterprise, we think in generations, not quarters,” Ralph adds. “Our commitment to sustainability, regional development, and technological excellence ensures that Mahlo remains a dependable partner for the textile and manufacturing world—now and for decades to come.”
