New Collaboration Brings Geometric Patterns and Craftsmanship Together in Hand-Knotted Rugs

The Rug Company has launched Ratio by Paul Smith, a new rug collection that translates the designer’s distinctive use of pattern into hand-crafted textile surfaces.

Drawing inspiration from Bauhaus principles of order, proportion and repetition, the collection explores the relationship between geometric structure and artisanal craftsmanship. Through hand-knotting techniques, graphic compositions are transformed into textured rugs with depth and visual movement.

A long-time admirer of modernist design, Paul Smith applies his approach to rhythm, structure and pattern across the collection. Developed in collaboration with The Rug Company, the designs reinterpret geometric forms through handcrafted production methods.

Four Designs Explore Geometric Order

The Ratio collection features four rug designs: Axis, Stil, Raster and Takt.

Each design presents a different interpretation of geometric composition, ranging from subtly structured grids to more intricate micro-geometric patterns. The collection balances minimal forms with layered visual detail through variations in texture and construction.

Takt Showcases New Craftsmanship Technique

At the centre of the collection is Takt, a design that incorporates a technical development created by The Rug Company’s artisans.

The rug combines the precision of Tulu knotting with the softer texture associated with Indo-Nepali Persian hand knotting, creating a surface that blends detailed pattern definition with a plush finish.

New Collection Follows Creative Leadership Appointment

The launch of Ratio follows the recent appointment of Will Cooper as Creative Director of The Rug Company.

According to the company, Cooper’s arrival marks a new phase in its creative development as it continues to collaborate with designers and artists from different disciplines.

Continuing a Tradition of Designer Collaborations

Since its inception, The Rug Company has worked with Nepalese artisans while partnering with a range of creative figures to translate their visual styles into rug designs.

Past collaborations have included Alexander McQueen, who began creating rugs as artworks and limited-edition tapestries in 1997, as well as Diane von Furstenberg, Dale Chihuly, and Rodarte.
