RBI Likely to Keep Repo Rate Unchanged Amid Inflation Concerns

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is widely expected to maintain the repo rate at 5.25% during its upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting as policymakers weigh persistent inflationary pressures against the need to support economic growth amid global uncertainties.

The MPC meeting is scheduled from August 3 to August 5, 2026, with the policy decision set to be announced on August 5. Market experts believe the central bank is likely to adopt a cautious “wait-and-watch” approach in response to ongoing geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and elevated inflation.

India’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rose to 4.38% in June 2026, moving above the RBI’s medium-term comfort level and reinforcing expectations that the central bank will refrain from further monetary easing for now.

Real Estate Sector Seeks Policy Stability

Industry leaders believe that maintaining stable interest rates will provide certainty to businesses, investors, developers, and homebuyers, particularly at a time when global economic conditions remain volatile.

Umesh Gowda H.A., Chairman and Founder, Sanjeevini Group, said the RBI is expected to prioritise macroeconomic stability over monetary easing due to persistent geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and rising energy prices.

He noted that a status quo on the repo rate would provide confidence to both developers and homebuyers, enabling investment and purchasing decisions to continue without unnecessary disruptions.

Mukesh Choudhary, Managing Director, Accuspace, echoed similar views, stating that the RBI faces the delicate challenge of balancing inflation management with economic growth.

According to Choudhary, predictable monetary policy is particularly important for commercial real estate and institutional investments, where policy consistency often matters more than short-term interest rate changes.

Investors Prefer Predictability

Experts also believe that stable monetary policy will strengthen investor confidence and support long-term capital inflows into India’s real estate sector.

Ankur Jalan, CEO, Golden Growth Fund (GGF), a Category II real estate-focused Alternative Investment Fund (AIF), said macroeconomic stability remains more important than immediate rate cuts for institutional investors.

He added that stable financing conditions encourage disciplined capital allocation, support project execution, and reinforce India’s attractiveness as a long-term investment destination, driven by urbanisation, structural housing demand, and increasing institutional participation.

Financing Stability Remains Critical

Maintaining predictable financing costs is also viewed as essential for businesses navigating uncertain global conditions.

Lalit Parihar, Managing Director, Aaiji Group, said the RBI is expected to continue focusing on anchoring inflation expectations while preserving overall economic stability.

He observed that although the real estate industry welcomes lower borrowing costs, maintaining investor confidence and financial stability remains the greater priority. Parihar added that the housing sector continues to be supported by genuine end-user demand and improved affordability, making it resilient even if policy rates remain unchanged in the near term.

Outlook

With inflation remaining above the RBI’s preferred level and global geopolitical risks continuing to affect commodity prices and supply chains, economists broadly expect the central bank to keep policy rates unchanged while closely monitoring domestic and international developments.

A stable policy stance is expected to provide confidence across sectors, particularly real estate, while allowing the RBI greater flexibility to respond once inflationary pressures moderate.
