November 07, 2024, Mumbai: This Diwali, the Diwali Waste Collection Drive—ReCircle’s most well-liked consumer-driven initiative—made a significant impact that extended beyond the celebrations! Over 45,000 kg of dry waste were collected during the resource recovery company’s largest-ever Diwali waste collection drive in Mumbai, it was reported today.
Over 3000 households were reached by the 300+ person team and 150+ vehicles for free door-to-door pick-ups throughout the Mumbai Western Line, Mumbai Central Line, and Navi Mumbai between October 14 and October 27, 2024. They collected all kinds of dry waste, including paper, cardboard, plastic, metal, glass, e-waste, clothing, footwear, and utensils.
“The statistics speak for themselves; if we wish to have a sustainable future, we must now consciously choose how we spend our lives and how much we consume. Waste in our landfills and oceans has increased dramatically in recent years due to never-ending cycles of “best deals and sales,” which has made us question whose problem it is. We think that a thoughtful community can create long-lasting change. During our door-to-door pick-ups this Diwali, we encountered many silent waste warriors and conscientious individuals who are keen to adopt sustainable practices and alter their consumption patterns. Rahul Nainani, CEO and co-founder of ReCircle, stated, “They are the primary reason we have collected and will now divert 45,000+ kg of waste.”
ReCircle’s Material & Textile Recovery Facility in Dahisar, Mumbai, will now receive the accumulated dry trash. After being separated, the garbage will be cleaned, processed, and bailed by Safai Saathis or ReCircle’s informal waste workers. In order to provide full traceability and transparency, this processed trash is then delivered to recyclers who turn it into raw materials for new goods, keeping it out of landfills and our water bodies.
ReCircle has continuously doubled its social and environmental effect over the last three editions. The company’s output increased from about 5000 kg in 2021 to 10,000 kg in 2022 and 20,000 kg in 2023. Last Diwali, ReCircle achieved its aim of collecting 20,369 kg thanks to the perseverance and hard work of its crew as well as the spirit of Mumbai as a whole.
All revenues from #PuranaSamaan’s individual households, societies, schools, colleges, and offices will be donated to St. Catherine School of Siena and Orphanage, ReCircle’s partner NGO for the past four years. The initiative was established in collaboration with Dabur India Limited. Through projects centered on education and rehabilitation, the non-profit seeks to empower impoverished children and give them a safe haven.
