Shaping a Greener Future: TANTU’s Textile Sustainability Event

TANTU hosted a highly impactful seminar focused on sustainability and recycling in the textile and apparel industry, bringing together experts, policymakers, and industry leaders at the India International Centre. The event explored innovative solutions to minimize waste, promote circular economy practices, conduct product life cycle analysis, and drive sustainable manufacturing.

The seminar featured insights from eight distinguished speakers, each addressing key aspects of sustainable practices, technological advancements, and policy initiatives shaping the industry’s future.

Key Highlights:

Dr. Ashok Kumar, Deputy Director General, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, delivered the keynote address, stressing the urgent need for industry-wide action on sustainability. He emphasized aligning efforts with the Paris Agreement 2015, urging businesses to move beyond discussions and take decisive steps to reduce GHG emissions.

Gaurav Seth, Head of Strategic Partnerships, Indo-German Yarn and Fibre LLP, discussed breakthroughs in recycling and re-engineering performance textiles, particularly for technical textiles like aramid and carbon fibers.

Ajitesh Upadhyaya, Senior Section Expert – Textile, BEE India, detailed the Indian Carbon Market Framework and the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), highlighting its alignment with global carbon tax regulations.

Chinky Tyagi Khare, Green Story, outlined the increasing regulatory pressure on manufacturers to provide environmental footprint information through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools.

Pankaj Kapoor, Independent Director, Green Consulting, spoke on climate change’s impact on textiles, key sustainability metrics, and upcoming ESG regulatory deadlines in 2025.

Prof. Abhijit Majumder, IIT Delhi, shared research on post-consumer textile recycling, showcasing how recycled yarns can be regenerated for fully-fashioned apparel.

Sutantu Goswami, Senior General Manager, TUV SUD, emphasized the fashion industry’s responsibility in adopting ethical sourcing and recycling initiatives for a sustainable future.

Sanya Arora, Engagement Officer, CDP, discussed SME sustainability disclosure requirements and their growing importance in the supply chain.

Dr. Arindam Basu and Lalit Goswami, NITRA, presented research on process optimization for recycled cotton in yarn production, highlighting limitations in blend proportions for ring and rotor spinning.

The event concluded with a commitment from stakeholders to enhance transparency, strengthen recycling infrastructure, and support sustainability-focused policies.
