Surat’s textile industry has suffered estimated losses exceeding ₹200 crore following torrential rainfall that flooded more than 26 major textile markets across the city. Nearly 12 inches of rain inundated commercial areas, damaging finished fabrics, raw materials and textile inventory worth several crores of rupees.

According to industry estimates, over 1,000 shops and warehouses were affected after overflowing creeks, waterlogging and inadequate drainage submerged basements and ground-floor commercial establishments.

Major Textile Hubs Affected

Among the worst-hit locations were the Ring Road textile market, Saroli, Limbayat and Parvat Patiya, where blocked drainage systems and backflow from overflowing creeks intensified flooding.

Several textile traders alleged that inadequate pre-monsoon preparations and poor drainage management by the civic administration contributed to the scale of the damage.

FOSTA Announces Market Closure

In response to the widespread flooding, the Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTA) announced the closure of the city’s textile markets on Wednesday. The temporary shutdown allowed traders to begin cleaning affected premises, assess inventory losses and restore business operations.

Cleanup Underway

With rainfall easing since Wednesday morning, floodwaters have gradually started receding across the affected areas. Traders and workers have commenced extensive cleanup operations, removing mud and sludge from shops and warehouses while evaluating the extent of damage to textile stock.

The floods have once again highlighted the vulnerability of Surat—India’s largest man-made fabric and synthetic textile hub—to extreme weather events and the importance of improving urban drainage infrastructure to safeguard industrial and commercial activity during the monsoon season.
