Turkey’s Home Textile Exports to Europe Decline in 2024: What’s Behind the $2.09 Billion Drop?

In 2024, Turkey’s home textile exports to Europe stood at $2.093 billion, marking a 2.99% drop compared to $2.157 billion in 2023. This decline is a continuation of a trend, with Europe’s share in Turkey’s total home textile exports falling to 45.39% — the second consecutive year of decline.

Home textiles, which include essential products like bedding, curtains, bed sheets, covers, and kitchen textiles, have long been a cornerstone of Turkey’s export industry. However, the once dominant European market is showing signs of slowing down. In 2023, Europe accounted for 46.34% of Turkey’s total home textile exports, amounting to $2.157 billion out of a total of $4.656 billion.

The overall export performance in 2024 wasn’t drastically different, as Turkey’s total home textile exports dipped slightly by 0.96%, settling at $4.611 billion. However, the decrease in exports to Europe was notably larger than the decline in Turkey’s total shipments. This shift is indicative of the changing dynamics in Turkey’s textile trade with Europe, according to market insights from Fibre2Fashion’s TexPro tool.

Looking at the bigger picture, Europe’s share in Turkey’s home textile exports had been on a gradual rise over the past several years. In 2022, the region’s share reached its highest point at 49.48%, as shipments valued at $2.567 billion helped Turkey’s total exports surpass $5 billion. But since then, the share has steadily declined, falling to 46.34% in 2023 and further dipping in 2024.

What’s interesting is that even though Turkey’s total home textile exports decreased in 2024, the overall volume of shipments to Europe still represents a significant portion of the market. In 2019, exports to Europe were valued at $2.007 billion, and the share was 43.10%. By 2020, shipments to Europe increased to $2.373 billion, accounting for 46.30% of total exports, with further rises in 2021 and 2022 before the most recent dip.

So, what’s behind the decline? Factors such as global economic uncertainty, changing consumer behavior, and shifting trade patterns could all be contributing to this shift. As Europe’s share of Turkey’s home textile market declines, both manufacturers and policymakers will need to closely monitor these trends to adapt to new opportunities in other regions.
