Timeless Living Room Ideas: 5 Things Designers Say to Remove

Creating a timeless living room is not always about buying new furniture or following the latest décor trends. Sometimes, removing outdated accessories and making thoughtful design changes can transform the space.

According to Southern Living, interior designers recommend five common living room elements that can make interiors look dated. Their suggestions focus on personal collections, balanced furniture, quality accessories and practical lighting.

1. Mass-Produced Decorative Accessories

Generic decorative items can make a living room feel less personal. Atlanta-based designer Bailey Ward recommends avoiding mass-produced figures, artificial plants and trendy accessories.

Instead, she suggests displaying vintage books, antique frames, pottery and travel souvenirs. These pieces add character and create a more personal interior.

2. Matching Furniture Sets

Using identical sofas, chairs, tables and loveseats can make a living room appear dated. Designer Dara Beitler recommends mixing furniture styles, materials and periods.

This approach creates a more collected look while adding variety and visual interest to the space.

3. Overly Trendy Décor

Decorative accessories that follow short-lived trends may quickly lose their appeal. Examples include word art, chevron patterns, farmhouse signs and widely available artificial greenery.

Designers recommend choosing meaningful accessories from different styles and design periods. This helps create a more individual and lasting interior.

4. Flat and Underfilled Cushions

Old or poorly filled cushions can affect the overall appearance of a living room. Austin-based designer Alicia Roche recommends replacing flat inserts with fuller alternatives.

She suggests using inserts that are two inches larger than the cushion covers. Down, feather blends and quality down alternatives can help create a fuller, tailored finish.

5. Bulky Floor Lamps

Oversized floor lamps with plain white shades can take up valuable space without adding much visual interest. Roche recommends considering smaller table lamps or wall sconces instead.

Cordless table lamps also offer a practical lighting solution. They reduce visible cables while adding ambient lighting, colour and pattern.

Creating a More Timeless Living Room

These recommendations highlight the importance of thoughtful furniture choices, personal accessories and functional lighting. Rather than filling a room with matching sets or temporary trends, designers encourage homeowners to select meaningful pieces that offer lasting style and everyday comfort.
