UnBlend Targets Recycling of Wool-Nylon Textiles

A new Danish initiative, UnBlend, is aiming to unlock the recycling potential of wool-nylon blended textiles widely used in hotels, ships, and public spaces.

These materials, commonly found in carpets and upholstery, are known for their durability but remain difficult to recycle due to their mixed fibre composition. As a result, large volumes of high-quality textiles are currently discarded or incinerated at the end of their lifecycle.

Addressing a Major Waste Challenge

Across the EU, approximately 1.6 million tonnes of carpets are disposed of annually, with most ending up in landfills or being burned. Despite their quality, wool-nylon blends are often overlooked in recycling systems due to the complexity of separating the fibres.

However, these materials present a significant opportunity. Large-scale refurbishments in hotels, offices, and cruise ships generate substantial volumes of uniform textile waste—making them ideal for systematic collection and recycling.

A Three-Pronged Approach to Circularity

The UnBlend partnership is tackling the challenge through a comprehensive strategy focused on:

  • Design Innovation: Developing products with improved material combinations and reduced use of adhesives to enable easier disassembly and recycling
  • Creative Reuse: Transforming textile waste into new, high-value products through redesign and upcycling
  • Recycling Technologies: Advancing methods to effectively separate wool and nylon fibres for closed-loop recycling

Successfully separating these fibres would allow both materials to be reused independently, significantly reducing reliance on virgin raw materials and lowering environmental impact.

Collaborative Industry Effort

The initiative brings together key players across the textile value chain, including manufacturers, researchers, and designers such as:

  • Danish Technological Institute
  • DTU
  • Gabriel
  • Dansk Wilton
  • Design School Kolding

By combining expertise across design, technology, and manufacturing, the partnership aims to develop scalable and commercially viable recycling solutions for blended textiles.

Driving Sustainable Textile Innovation

UnBlend represents a significant step toward advancing circularity in the textile industry. By rethinking product design and enabling fibre separation, the initiative could transform how complex textiles are managed at end-of-life—turning waste into valuable resources.
