Velvet Fabric Trend 2027: The Luxury Material Replacing Bouclé

Velvet fabric is gaining attention as a major interior design trend for 2027. Designers expect this luxurious material to feature prominently in furniture, upholstery and home décor as homeowners move towards warmer and more expressive interiors.

According to Real Simple, velvet is attracting interest as bouclé loses some of its popularity. While bouclé became widely used for its soft texture and cosy appearance, designers say its association with monochromatic modern interiors has made it feel less fresh.

Interior designer Andrew Suvalsky notes that bouclé is closely linked to a specific design style. He also points to its maintenance challenges, as the textured surface can trap crumbs and become difficult to clean.

Velvet Gains Popularity for 2027 Interiors

Designer Avery Carter, founder of Avery Carter Design, highlights the renewed interest in plush velvet. She says newer performance velvet fabrics combine a luxurious appearance with practical everyday use.

Velvet also creates visual depth through the way it absorbs and reflects light. This quality gives rich colours greater intensity and makes furniture look more sophisticated.

Unlike heavily textured bouclé, velvet offers a smooth, plush finish. It can also bring a sense of timeless elegance to both contemporary and traditional interiors.

Rich Colours Shape the Velvet Trend

Deep oxblood, chocolate brown and dusty blush are among the velvet shades gaining attention. These colours add warmth and create a distinctive look across furniture and decorative elements.

Designers are also using performance velvet for larger upholstered pieces, including sofas and beds. Advances in fabric technology allow homeowners to enjoy a plush appearance without compromising everyday practicality.

How to Style Velvet at Home

Velvet works across different furniture styles and sizes. Large sofas and statement headboards can create a strong visual impact. Meanwhile, accent chairs, small sofas and poufs offer more subtle ways to introduce the fabric.

Carter recommends combining velvet with natural materials such as wood, stone and linen. These combinations balance the fabric’s formal appearance and create a comfortable interior.

The renewed interest in velvet reflects a wider shift towards warmer colours, tactile materials and more personalised interiors. As a result, velvet is emerging as a notable fabric choice for home furnishings in 2027.
