Hürth, 20 February 2025 – The BioReCer project is now in its final phase, focusing on strengthening certification schemes for biological resources derived from waste. This initiative is essential to increase consumer trust, support the bio-based industry, and enhance policy frameworks for sustainable value chains.
Why It Matters
Biological residues and waste—such as food waste, organic municipal waste, and agricultural by-products—have immense potential to replace fossil feedstocks and drive the EU’s green transition. However, gaps in certification are slowing down their industrial adoption.
The EU-funded BioReCer (Biological Resources Certifications Schemes) project is tackling this challenge by integrating new sustainability, origin, and traceability criteria into existing certification frameworks.
Key Achievements of BioReCer
✔ Material Flow Analysis (MFA): Evaluated feedstock flows in forestry, fishery, agriculture, and municipal waste, identifying untapped bio-based resources.
✔ BioReCer ICT Tool (BIT): A digital platform that enhances traceability, environmental performance, and certification readiness for bio-based industries.
✔ EU Standards & Policy Recommendations: The project compiled 149 standards and 26 certification schemes, along with key recommendations to enhance bioeconomy regulations and prevent greenwashing.
