India’s Retail Sales Grow 6% in June 2026, Led by Food & Grocery, QSR and Footwear
RAI Business Survey highlights steady consumer demand despite cautious spending, with retailers focusing on value, technology and omnichannel growth.
India’s retail sector recorded a 6% year-on-year growth in June 2026, reflecting resilient consumer demand despite a cautious spending environment, according to Round 72 of the Retailers Association of India (RAI) Business Survey.
Regionally, West India emerged as the strongest-performing market with 8% growth, followed by North India at 7%, while East India and South India each registered 6% growth, indicating broad-based retail momentum across the country.
Among retail categories, Food & Grocery led the market with 10% year-on-year growth, followed by Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) at 9% and Footwear at 8%. Consumer Durables & Electronics recorded 7% growth, while both Jewellery and Apparel & Clothing posted 6% growth during the month.
The survey indicates that Indian consumers continue to spend selectively, with essential goods and experience-driven categories maintaining healthy demand. Retailers are responding by adopting disciplined inventory management, investing in technology-driven decision-making, and strengthening omnichannel capabilities to improve customer engagement and operational efficiency.
The report also notes that promotional campaigns, value-focused offerings and ongoing digital transformation remain central to sustaining retail growth as consumer preferences continue to evolve.
Commenting on the findings, Kumar Rajagopalan, Executive Director and CEO of the Retailers Association of India (RAI), said:
“The June 2026 survey highlights cautious retail landscape. While the intent to spend remains intact among Indian consumers, they are highly value-conscious, prompting retailers to pivot strategies quickly to sustain growth. Retailers are adapting with sharp value and efficiency and preparing for the upcoming festive season.”
The survey suggests that while consumers remain mindful of their spending, retailers are successfully adapting to changing buying patterns through operational efficiency, digital innovation and customer-centric strategies. As businesses prepare for the festive shopping season, the sector is expected to continue focusing on value creation and enhanced shopping experiences to drive future growth.
