Asahi Kasei has improved carbon footprint transparency for acrylonitrile production. Its South Korean subsidiary, Tongsuh Petrochemical, has received independent third-party verification for its product carbon footprint (PCF).
The company produces acrylonitrile at its Ulsan manufacturing site. Socotec Certification Japan conducted the audit and awarded “Reasonable Assurance” for the fiscal 2025 carbon footprint data.
Independent Verification of Carbon Data
The audit covered raw material procurement and production. It also reviewed the calculation method, source data and reporting process.
“Reasonable Assurance” provides a high level of confidence in the reported data. It also exceeds the requirements for “Limited Assurance.” This verification responds to growing customer demand for reliable environmental information.
Acrylonitrile is an important chemical used in several industries. Its applications include ABS resins, acrylamide, acrylic fibres and carbon fibre precursor materials.
Progress in Lower-Carbon Production
Tongsuh Petrochemical obtained ISCC PLUS certification in 2021. The certification supports the traceability of bio-based and circular raw materials.
Since 2022, the company has produced and marketed acrylonitrile using biomass-derived propylene. It follows a mass-balance approach for this production.
Asahi Kasei’s Sustainability Plans
Asahi Kasei plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from acrylonitrile production. The company will continue to improve its catalysts and manufacturing technologies.
It also plans to increase the use of biomass-based raw materials. These efforts aim to support lower-carbon production and provide customers with reliable environmental data.
The initiative supports industries working to reduce emissions across their supply chains.
