India continues to strengthen its position in sustainable fashion innovation as the R|Elan™ Circular Design Challenge (CDC) evolves into a powerful platform promoting circularity, responsible design, and forward-thinking creativity. Developed in collaboration with the United Nations in India and Lakmé Fashion Week, the initiative supports emerging designers who are redefining the industry through material innovation and sustainable systems.

This season, CRCLE, founded by Varshne, emerged as the winner of the prestigious challenge, earning a coveted showcase at Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI 2026. The recognition marks a significant milestone for the Chennai-based menswear label, highlighting its commitment to circular design practices and conscious craftsmanship.

CRCLE’s design philosophy focuses on extending circularity beyond the lifecycle of garments. The brand reinterprets modern menswear essentials by combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary silhouettes, textures, and functional detailing.

The label has built an extensive circular ecosystem, collaborating with over 100 artisans and more than 50 craft communities and material innovators across India. Its material portfolio includes naturally dyed Weganool from Auroville, Korai grass from Pattamadai, cotton from Chennimalai, and recycled cotton from Tirupur. Additionally, CRCLE incorporates leather offcuts, handcrafted metal buttons from Kutch, and repurposed stainless steel elements into its designs.

Within just 18 months of its launch, the brand has recycled over 400 kilograms of textile waste and contributed to producing 5,800 litres of Aarka, a by-product that enhances soil health and supports agricultural productivity in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

At the showcase, CRCLE unveiled its collection ‘DIALOGUE’, which explores the connection between material, maker, and wearer. Rooted in circular principles and handcrafted processes, the collection emphasises texture, thoughtful construction, and longevity, moving beyond seasonal fashion cycles.

Sharing her vision, Varshne stated that the collection aims to reconnect people with materials and craftsmanship, embracing imperfections and textures that bring character and authenticity to each piece.

Congratulating the winner, Hemant D. Sharma, President – Polyester at Reliance Industries Limited, highlighted the importance of empowering young designers to integrate sustainability and circularity into their creative processes. He emphasised that initiatives like the R|Elan CDC foster innovation, mentorship, and global exposure, enabling scalable and impactful solutions for the fashion industry.

Stefan Priesner, United Nations Resident Coordinator in India, also praised the initiative, noting that the collaboration supports India’s transition toward a circular and climate-resilient economy by promoting waste reduction, environmental protection, and green livelihoods.

Over the years, the R|Elan Circular Design Challenge has grown into a dynamic ecosystem, offering mentorship, strategic guidance, and international visibility. By connecting emerging designers with industry leaders and global platforms, it continues to position India at the forefront of sustainable and circular fashion.

In 2026, the initiative further expands its global reach with a special Indo-French edition in partnership with the Embassy of France in India and the French Institute in India, reinforcing cross-cultural collaboration in sustainable design.

With growing anticipation around CRCLE’s showcase, the platform continues to drive innovation and shape the future of circular fashion on a global scale.
