Heimtextil 2027 will introduce the Functional Futures Lab, a special showcase of innovative materials and their practical applications. Curated by Future Fabrics Expo, the showcase will highlight material performance, sustainability and design from 12 to 15 January 2027 in Frankfurt, Germany.

The Functional Futures Lab will bring together experimental prototypes and commercially available products. It will explore how materials can improve thermal comfort, acoustic performance, indoor environments and durability.

The showcase will feature applications for architecture, interior design and hospitality. Visitors can also explore materials designed to provide flame protection and adapt to different environmental conditions.

Three Themes for Material Innovation

The exhibition will feature three colour-coded areas: Circular Systems, Living Nature and Natural Performance. Each area will highlight materials based on their origins, processing methods and design approaches.

Exhibits will include upholstery materials made from untreated wool fibres and living root systems. These materials are designed to provide flame protection without toxic chemicals.

Other innovations include durable bio-based composites and dyes made from food waste for textiles and wood. The showcase will also explore properties such as temperature responsiveness, antibacterial effects and long-term durability.

Focus on Practical Applications

Future Fabrics Expo will bring its expertise in material innovation and sustainability to the showcase. Its international network connects material developers, designers and researchers.

Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt, said the showcase would connect early-stage developments with solutions already available on the market.

Amanda Johnston, Chief Design Officer at Future Fabrics Expo, said the partnership would connect inspiration with practical solutions and support a responsible future for home and interior textiles.

The exhibition will also provide information on each material’s development stage through Technology Readiness Levels. This will help trade visitors assess potential applications and make informed material choices.
