AI-powered platform showcased at Kingpins China to support faster denim product development

Jeanologia has introduced “Billy”, an artificial intelligence system developed for denim finishing design, to the Chinese market during Kingpins China held on May 21 and 22 in Hangzhou.

According to the company, the AI-based system is designed to convert garment images into laser-ready denim finishing designs within minutes, helping brands and manufacturers connect design inspiration directly with production workflows.

Jeanologia stated that “Billy” interprets vintage denim characteristics such as fades, contrasts and wear patterns, then automatically generates files optimized for industrial laser execution. The company said the system aims to simplify a stage of denim product development that traditionally required extensive manual adjustments and technical work.

Jean Pierre Inchauspe said:

“The industry is looking for faster and more precise ways to develop authentic vintage products. With Billy, brands and manufacturers can directly connect inspiration and production, reducing complexity while maintaining authenticity.”

According to Jeanologia, the AI system has been trained using more than 9,000 laser designs developed by the company over several decades in collaboration with denim brands, designers and suppliers. The company said this database enables the platform to analyse vintage wear patterns and convert them into reproducible laser designs for industrial application.

During Kingpins China, visitors are able to view live demonstrations showing how vintage garment images are transformed into laser executions through a digital workflow integrating AI and laser technology.

Jeanologia noted that laser technology, introduced by the company more than 25 years ago, replaced traditional manual denim finishing techniques associated with higher environmental impact and worker health risks. The company stated that the combination of AI, laser systems and automation is supporting further digitalisation and efficiency in denim production.

The launch of “Billy” in China comes as the country’s textile industry continues to invest in automation, digital product development and manufacturing technologies. Jeanologia has operated in China for more than 18 years and currently works with over 200 customers in the country through local teams focused on laser design and product engineering.

According to the company, more than 20% of jeans produced in China are manufactured using Jeanologia technologies.

Jean Pierre Inchauspe added:

“What we are seeing is the beginning of a new digital workflow for denim creation, where AI helps transform inspiration into production with much greater speed, precision and consistency.”

At the event, Jessica Lau is also participating in the Denim Talks panel titled “Artificial Intelligence: From Cotton to Culture,” discussing the role of AI in denim design, manufacturing and consumer experience.
