Mumbai, January, 2025: In partnership with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Birla Cellulose launched the groundbreaking Liva Protégé Textiles Design Competition, which culminated in a spectacular conclusion at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. Showcasing their ideas in the Surface Design, Woven Design, and Print Design categories, the event honored the inventiveness and ingenuity of 15 student finalists from NIFT centers throughout India.

A fashion competition in India called Liva Protégé lets up-and-coming designers show off their ideas and gain recognition in the industry. Under the direction of well-known designer and mentor Karishma Shahani Khan, the students made sustainability a central theme in their designs. Their creative designs made use of environmentally friendly materials including recycled yarns and Livaeco textiles, and they created their collections using dead stock resources and zero-waste methods. Birla Cellulose’s dedication to encouraging sustainable practices in the textile sector is demonstrated by this project.

The distinguished judging panel included members of the Birla Cellulose executive committee, Ms. Anupama Mohan and Dr. Aspi Patel, as well as prominent figures in the industry, Narendra Kumar, Ekta Saran, and Dr. Deepa Chandran. They assessed the creative works of the finalists, with special emphasis on design originality, sustainability, and inventiveness. The recipients were given their awards by Mr. Manmohan Singh, Mr. Suraj Bahirwani, and Mr. Murugan Thenkondar, senior executives from Aditya Birla-Grasim Industries. The winners, who represented NIFT centers in Patna, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, received cash prizes, certificates, and trophies in recognition of their extraordinary talent.

Industry executives Karishma Shahani Khan, Mr. Surya Vallari, Chief Sustainability Officer at Birla Cellulose, and Prof. Dr. Sharmila Dua, Director of NIFT Mumbai, were among the motivational speakers at the event. They exchanged insightful opinions about innovation, sustainability, and the value of developing the next generation of textile industry expertise.

Mr. Manmohan Singh, Chief Marketing Officer at Birla Cellulose, remarked, “The Liva Protégé Textiles Design Competition exemplifies our dedication to fostering innovation and sustainability in the textile industry. It’s incredible to witness the talent and creativity of these young designers, who are paving the way for a more sustainable future. We are proud to support initiatives that not only celebrate creativity but also emphasize the importance of responsible design practices.”
