Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has developed an award-winning packaging concept that combines a corrugated outer box with recyclable, laser-marked flexible packaging. Designed for eCommerce and bag-in-box applications, the concept demonstrates how advanced packaging technology can support circularity while helping brands respond more quickly to changing market requirements.

The new concept uses laser marking technology to apply artwork directly onto flexible packaging during the converting process. By eliminating conventional decorative printing and the associated printing plates, the solution enables faster artwork changes, greater personalisation and increased design flexibility.

This approach can help brands shorten lead times and improve supply chain agility, particularly when introducing new products, seasonal designs or personalised packaging. It also provides greater flexibility for customers managing increasingly diverse product portfolios.

Mondi’s concept can be adapted to several flexible packaging formats, including reels and pre-made pouches such as the re/cycle StripPouch, as well as larger pre-made bags such as the re/cycle FlexiBag. By simplifying material structures and reducing decorative elements, the formats are designed to support recycling objectives.

Depending on application requirements, the packaging can also incorporate bio-based feedstocks or post-consumer recycled content. According to Mondi’s internal Product Impact Assessment, the bio-based laser-marked StripPouch can deliver significant CO2 reductions compared with a conventional fossil-based printed and laminated stand-up pouch.

The concept also brings together Mondi’s expertise in corrugated and flexible packaging, allowing customers to explore complete bag-in-box solutions from a single packaging partner. This integrated approach can help improve efficiency across the packaging supply chain while providing greater flexibility in packaging development.

“Customers are under growing pressure to meet sustainability targets while managing increasingly complex product portfolios and changing consumer demands. This concept supports circularity with the use of bio-based materials and greater artwork flexibility in a single solution, helping brands respond more quickly to market requirements while progressing towards their circularity goals.” said Jens Koesters, Manager Technical Service, R&D and Innovation, Mondi Consumer Flexibles.

Mondi is currently working with customers and partners to explore wider commercial applications of the concept. Potential applications include pet food, home and personal care products, and eCommerce packaging formats.

The innovation has received further recognition after being named a winner of the German Packaging Award 2026 in the Sustainability category. The award highlights the concept’s potential to address evolving sustainability and recycling requirements while improving flexibility and efficiency across the packaging value chain.
