Overprint Varnishes Market Forecast to Hit USD 2.92 Billion by 2034

Premium packaging, e-commerce growth and sustainable coating technologies continue to drive demand for advanced overprint varnishes worldwide.

The global overprint varnishes market is projected to grow from USD 1.82 billion in 2025 to USD 2.92 billion by 2034, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.43% during the forecast period of 2026–2034, according to a new report by Polaris Market Research. The market is expected to reach USD 1.91 billion in 2026, reflecting steady near-term expansion.

Overprint varnishes are protective and decorative coatings applied over printed materials to improve gloss, abrasion resistance, moisture protection and overall durability. They are widely used across packaging, folding cartons, labels, magazines, catalogues and commercial printing applications.

Premium Packaging and E-commerce Fuel Market Growth

The report identifies premium packaging and the continued expansion of e-commerce as the primary factors driving demand.

Brands across cosmetics, luxury food, alcoholic beverages and electronics are increasingly investing in premium print finishes to improve shelf appeal and strengthen brand identity. This trend has encouraged greater adoption of advanced overprint varnishes that provide enhanced visual appeal and product protection.

The rapid growth of online retail is also creating demand for more durable packaging capable of withstanding shipping, handling and storage. According to the International Trade Administration, global B2C e-commerce revenues are expected to approach USD 5.5 trillion by 2027, encouraging packaging manufacturers to invest in coatings that offer superior scuff resistance and long-lasting protection.

UV-Curable Varnishes Lead the Market

Among product technologies, UV-curable overprint varnishes accounted for approximately 41.27% of the market in 2025. Their fast curing speeds, excellent gloss finish and strong chemical resistance continue to make them a preferred choice for commercial printers seeking higher production efficiency.

At the same time, water-based overprint varnishes are expected to register the fastest growth, expanding at a CAGR of nearly 8.93% during the forecast period. Growing environmental regulations, stricter VOC emission standards and increasing demand for food-safe, low-migration coatings are accelerating adoption of water-based alternatives.

Packaging Remains the Largest Application

Packaging represented the largest application segment in 2025, accounting for around 52.84% of total market demand. Flexible packaging, folding cartons, labels and premium FMCG packaging continue to support market expansion.

Commercial printing is also expected to witness significant growth as demand rises for premium gloss, matte and tactile finishes across promotional materials, catalogues and luxury marketing campaigns.

By end-use industry, the food and beverage sector maintained the largest market share, supported by increasing global consumption of packaged food products and demand for food-safe coatings.

Meanwhile, the pharmaceutical industry is projected to emerge as the fastest-growing end-use segment due to increasing requirements for anti-counterfeiting measures, product serialization and durable label protection.

Asia Pacific Leads Global Market

Asia Pacific remained the largest regional market in 2025 with an estimated 46.18% share, supported by strong packaging manufacturing activity in China and India.

China continues to benefit from expanding consumer demand and retail sales, while India is witnessing increased investment in flexible packaging and printing infrastructure.

North America is experiencing growing adoption of UV-curable and sustainable coating technologies, supported by innovations such as BASF’s low-VOC coating solutions introduced during 2026.

Europe’s market growth is being driven by tighter environmental regulations, including updated sustainability requirements for paints and varnishes introduced by the European Commission in February 2026. Latin America is also recording steady growth, particularly in Brazil and Mexico, supported by rising food packaging demand.

Industry Focuses on Sustainability and Innovation

The market remains moderately fragmented, with manufacturers competing on sustainability, curing efficiency, product compatibility and pricing.

Leading companies include:

  • Akzo Nobel N.V.
  • ALTANA AG
  • Arkema S.A.
  • Ashland Inc.
  • BASF SE
  • CHT Germany GmbH
  • DIC Corporation
  • Evonik Industries AG
  • FUJIFILM Holdings Corporation
  • Koninklijke DSM N.V.
  • The Lubrizol Corporation
  • Michelman Inc.
  • PPG Industries Inc.
  • Sun Chemical Corporation

Recent developments highlight the industry’s focus on environmentally responsible solutions. Hubergroup expanded its water-based ink and varnish portfolio for direct food-contact packaging in 2025, while Evonik introduced new defoamer additives specifically designed for waterborne overprint varnishes and printing inks.

As sustainability regulations tighten globally and premium packaging continues to gain importance, the report indicates that manufacturers are increasingly investing in innovative coating technologies that combine high performance with lower environmental impact.
